Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles in the world and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge game development, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
